Welcome, welcome, welcome. In a constant quest to share all the great music we come across with our beloved fans, the SeeBeyondGenre staff has decided kick off a new series entitled “10 Artists To Listen To Right Now”. Unlike similar lists that may try to point out 10 upcoming artists to look out for in the future, we decided to only highlight 10 artists or acts who are coming off the release of a new project or are currently putting out a lot of new material – frankly, because otherwise we would never be able to limit the list to 10. So take this opportunity to take a look at what artists are currently filling the playlists of the SBG staff.
Disclaimer: Since this is the first installment of the series we are doing a little bit of catching up, having artists who may have been quite over the last few weeks but bare with us. In addition, we are holding off on a few artists who are definitely worthy of making this list until next time as they are currently working on projects releasing down the road. Hope you guys enjoy the list as much as we did making it…
Japandroids is a Vancouver rock duo that consists of Brian King (guitar, vocals) and David Prowse (drums, vocals). They are known for their high energy stage show and also their extensive touring schedule each year. They have two releases, Post Nothing and Celebration Rock, both off of Polyvinyl Record Company. For only having two members in the band, the Japandroids are able to blow you away with the power of their sound. Each song is a fireball burning its way through your ears.
19 year old Lorine Chia, is a multi-talented artist with Cameroonian roots and a Mid-Westside style. We were first put on to Lorine, who is currently residing in Ohio, back in May and were immediately struck by her ability to impress across a variety of genres. With an arsenal including a phenomenal voice, great taste in production and a poetic flow that walks the line between spoken word and rapping which she shows off on occasion, we see serious breakout potential in this young artist. Keep a look out for her self titled album releasing this summer…
After taking the world by storm with his internet sensation “Survival Tactics”, Joey Bada$$, a 17 year old from New York, has cemented his place as hip-hop’s next big thing. Not only is he a phenom, himself but the young emcee has established his Pro.Era squad as a movement, with their gritty 90′s inspired sound. They’ve won over old-heads and bloggers alike with a steady stream of high quality material. His most recent release 1999 recieved critical acclaim and more importantly made a statement: Joey Badass is the truth
With only 3 released songs to their name, Australian band Atlas Genius has already managed to win us over. The indie rock group, influenced by the likes of The Police and Death Cab For Cutie, has already been gaining popularity here in the states over the last few months, but that might be headed for the fast track after Chiddy Bang’s Xaphoon Jones remixed their hit song “Trojans”. When it comes time for these guys to release their first LP, trust that we won’t be the only ones on the edge of our seat.
Fresh off the release of their debut EP, Separated at Birth, which included Skyzoo, Smoke DZA, Freeway and Emilio Rojas to name a few, Chicago based production duo has really begun to hit their stride. They’ve recently received cosigns from hip-hop tastemakers such as The Source, Nah Right and 2DopeBoyz and have been putting in work with the likes of XV, Mikkey Halsted and labelmate Uno Hype. With every new beat these guys drop seeming to be better than the last, Odd Couple is a name to look out for in coming months.
Lianne La Havas
Lianne La Havas is a 22 year old singer/songwriter born and raised in London, England and we think she just might be the next international female singer to see success here in the States (think Ellie Goulding and Lykke Li). While La Havas isn’t necessarily a secret, seeing as she’s signed to Warner Bros. and recently toured with Bon Iver, there will likely be a lot more limelight coming this girl’s way over the next year. Take a listen to her debut album Is Your Love Big Enough? to see just what all the fuss is about.
The more we get to know Caleb James, the more we believe that there is nothing this kid can’t do. He can spit, he can produce, he can rock a crowd, he can skateboard, he can juke… With the recent release of Ground Up, his debut mixtape, the Savemoney representer showcased his many skills perfectly. Tracks like “WildNOut” shows Caleb’s ability to make a hit song (if his production on “Juke Juke” hadn’t already) while his bars on “SaveMoney Cypher” shows he isn’t soft coming off the top. If Caleb continues to show the progression he’s shown over the last year, the sky is the limit for him. Also, shout out to 10Photos for the ill pic.
The Gaslight Anthem
In the matter of 6 years, Benny Horowitz (drums), Alex Levine (bass), Alex Rosamilia (guitar), and Brian Fallon (guitar, vocals) have launched The Gaslight Anthem from small clubs and basements in New Jersey to huge festivals on a major record label. The Gaslight Anthem is a band that wears their influences on their sleeves. You can hear elements from Tom Petty, The Cure, Bruce Springsteen, and The Clash all in one Gaslight record. They made their first LP, Sink or Swim, in 2007 on XOXO Records. They have made two huge hit albums, ’59 Sound and American Slang, on SideOneDummy Records. They just released Handwritten that is put out by Mercury Records. Brian Fallon has grown as a songwriter through each of these releases and is now even getting comparisons to his own hero Bruce Springsteen.
Milo & Otis
Of all the artists we’ve covered in this list, Milo & Otis are the probably the ones we know the least about. However, from what we gathered we know that they are made up of composer/producer Owen Hill and singer/song writer Jamila Woods, they have collaborated with some of our favorite Chicago musicians and their album “The Joy” is wonderful in every sense of the word. Looking forward, we are eager to learn more about and hearing more from Milo & Otis.
Chance The Rapper
One of the most charismatic young rappers around today, chance has brought his unique style to chicago’s already surging rap scene. His distinct presence combines supreme lyricism with unreal witt and individuality. Since releasing 10day (the young chicagoan’s opus created during his 10 day suspension from high school) chance has parlayed his success into selling out solo shows, opening for the likes of Childish Gambino and Juicy J, and earning cosigns from some of raps biggest names in the game. We couldn’t be more excited about what the future holds for Chance The Rapper.
