Powered by the success of lead single “Mercy”, the G.O.O.D. Music family has been on top for most of 2012. As the summer went on, it looked like maybe Cruel Summer wasn’t going to happen… But as we were reassured by several members, the highly anticipated compilation album finally reached our ears. As the team boasts an ecclectic variation of different styles, nuances, and personalities, so does Cruel Summer. One thing is for sure, Cruel Summer plays alot more like Watch The Throne than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Not to say that WTT wasn’t a great album, but the comparison eludes to the fact that the sound was geared more toward making a hot album, rather than creating a timeless piece of music. Nonetheless, making a compilation album is hard work. (See the abomination that was We Are Young Money). The attention to detail and quality is ever present throughout the project, as we’re taken on a trip through the collage of dopeness that is G.O.O.D. Music. They bless us with the vision and polish of a Kanye, the realness of Pusha T, the undeniable charm of 2 Chainz and Big Sean, and the futuristic, unmatched skill of producers Hit-Boy, Lifted, and Travis Scott…and that’s just scratching the surface. Though, the album may leave you wanting more, you can’t deny that with standout cuts like “Clique”, “To The World”, “Mercy” (just to name a few) Cruel Summer is one of the big highlights of 2012.
