Crystal Castles’ third self-titled album appeared on Spotify today, and for better or worse it is definitely the band’s most intense release to date. Fans who appreciated II’s comparatively darker atmosphere should find a lot to enjoy on this release, but anyone hoping that the band would return to the more straightforward style of their first album is going to be left behind. The band’s identity now hinges on the contrast between their huge synth and drum-machine work which could sometimes work as a Hip-Hop or Trance single, and Alice’s dark and distorted, sometimes gothic shouts and whispers. “Plague” and “Sad Eyes” are probably the easiest tracks to get into, but the entire thing hits hard.
