Director Anthony Mandler does it again with his new video for Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble”. Swift wanted to do something “different” for this video, and she fully succeeded in doing so. Different for her atleast… the video almost mirrors the structure of another Mandler directed video for “Ride” by Lana Del Rey. But that video was one of my favorites of the year, so no complaints on my part.
The video begins with Swift waking up in an empty [what looks like] festival camping grounds with a pre-roll voice over, “I think….I think when it’s all over it just comes back in flashes, ya know?” The video then continues to visually tell the story of early stages of a relationship between Swift and a leather jacket wearing, tattooed guy [who we already know is the "trouble" she sings about] and their experiences together that puts Swift in out of character circumstances “I think that the worst part of it all wasn’t losing him…it was losing me.” Those same out of character experiences that show her path of self discovery “I don’t know if you know who you are, until you lose who you are” All up until the point of his eventual abandonment. ”It’s like a kaleidoscope of memories, it all just comes back. But he never does…”
